Accident Claims Life of Phil Shirk
By Dave Hubbert on 10/14/2002
The life of yet another class member has been claimed tragically. Phil Shirk was killed in an automobile accident in Arizona on Tuesday, October 8. A portion of the newspaper report from “The Arizona Republic” is as follows:

"The latest crash on the Loop 101 occurred Tuesday afternoon when one car sideswiped another near Raintree Road, north of Shea Boulevard. One car careered across the median, under the cable barrier, striking another vehicle and killing the driver, Phillip L. Shirk, 55, of Colorado.

In Tuesday's accident, a southbound Honda coupe driven by Laina M. Hill, 24, of Scottsdale, apparently sideswiped a Daewoo driven by Mary C. Bolick, 16, of Phoenix, investigators said.

Both vehicles spun out of control, then struck each other again.

The Daewoo continued into the median, striking the cable barrier then passing under the barrier and into the northbound lanes, striking a BMW coupe driven by Shirk. Bolick and her passenger were treated for minor injuries and released. Hill was uninjured."

A memorial service will be held in Lone Tree, Colorado on Friday, October 18th at Hudson Gardens at 2:30 pm.

A memorial service will also be held at Trinity United Methodist in Mt. Gilead, on October 26th at 2:00 pm.
