Jim Miller Passes

James D. “Jim” Miller, 73, of County Road 30, Mount Gilead, Ohio died Monday, November 22, 2004 at Riverside Hospital.
He was a lifelong Morrow County resident where he was born on March 11, 1931 to the late Lawrence W. Miller and Amber M. (Junkin) Miller who survives. He graduated from Mount Gilead High School in 1949 and received a B.S. in Education, History and French from Otterbein College and his M.A. in Social Studies from The Ohio State University. Jim served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
His teaching career at Mount Gilead and Edison Schools spanned 31 years, and he also taught history for the OSU Branch in Mansfield and the Ohio University Branch at Rickenbacker AFB.
Jim was a lifelong member of Boundary United Methodist Church where he was a Lay Leader and also taught Sunday School. He also served as Lay Delegate to the East Ohio Methodist Conference for 18 years, represented the Mount Vernon District on the East Ohio Methodist Archives and History Commission, and was on the Methodist Shrine Committee. He was active in the Morrow County Historical Society, where he was a charter member, President for 14 years, and was currently serving as Historian. He helped restore the log house at the Morrow County fairgrounds, the Detterman log church at Lyme Village in Bellevue, and most recently the Pollock cannon.
Jim was also past President and member of the Morrow County Retired Teachers Association and a member of the Ohio Historical Society. He was a member of the Korean War Veterans Association Chapter 136, the E.B. Rinehart American Legion Post #754, and the Chaney V.F.W. Post #7201, the Green Pairs Garden Club, and Alpha Twig at MCH.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife Phylis L. (Bush) Miller, whom he married March 30, 1957; a son Steven (Suzette) Miller of Mount Gilead; a daughter Myrna (Charles) Wall of Marion; a grandson Steven “Ross” Miller; two step-grandsons Bret and Nick Wall; two brothers Frederick A. (Janet) Miller and Carl E. Miller all of Mount Gilead; his mother-in-law Marie Bush of Edison; and brothers and sisters-in-law Harold Bush and Kenneth and Elizabeth Bush all of Edison and Marilyn and Howard Huston of Caledonia.
A daughter Emily Amber Miller also preceded him in death.
Friends may call at the Craven Funeral Home in Mount Gilead on Tuesday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. and at the church one-hour prior to the services. Pastors Howard Huston and Bob Johncox will conduct funeral services on Wednesday, November 24, 2004 at 2 p.m. in the Boundary United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Iberia Cemetery with military honors by the Mount Gilead VFW and Am Vets Posts.
